After a session of plaque removal, particularly if it has been some time since it was last done, the adjacent gums may have an increased tendency to bleed, the newly uncovered tooth surface may be sensitive to cold and, in the areas where the plaque was most difficult to remove, the gums may swell a little. All of this will be transient, gone in 24 to 48 hours.
Why? Increased bleeding, and possibly swelling, due to the extra inflammation caused by the cleaning process, and sensitivity because the uncovered tooth surface has been demineralised by the acid released from the plaque.
If Queen Victoria[1] was still with us she would say 'Lie back and think of gum health'. Sound advice.
