The dramatic current UK television advert which unfortunately suggests that Corsodyl is the cure for gum disease begs the question 'How do I know'.
Beyond the obvious and not terribly useful 'see the dentist' advice, the observations you can make yourself are :
1. Gums that bleed.
2. Reddening of the edges of the gums.
3. Swelling at the edges of the gums.
4. Loosening of the teeth.
Rolling back the effects of gum disease is actually rather difficult, which is why dentists are always banging on about the importance of prevention.
What we do to counter the problem depends on the individual case, but it always involves plaque removal. Especially in the areas below the gums where even perfect oral hygiene measures don't reach.
To maintain the improvement created by clinical treatment, one of the most effective things you can do for yourself, is cutting sugar in all its forms out of your diet. Remember, plaque can ONLY be made from sugar.
