Staining.

Lets get things clear - staining and plaque are NOT the same thing. Plaque is the matrix created by bacteria from sugar, staining is just that - molecules from food and, if you do it, smoking.

Staining, although unsightly is harmless. In fact, apart from the staining resulting from smoking, it can be the result of a healthy diet. Black tea, coffee, dark coloured berries, red wine, turmeric are all sources of anti-oxidants and staining. How irritating is that!

If you've got staining what should you do? Well, the first thing is to AVOID harsh, abrasive toothpastes. You know the ones "Use Abrasodent for sparkling white teeth". These things rub away the enamel at a frightening rate. Used regularly you soon have exposed dentine, which, being porous, stains more easily and is sensitive, so now your teeth are stained worse than before AND sensitive.

The correct way to tackle the problem is, first if you smoke, kick the habit. Next check your diet and cut back on black tea and coffee, red wine etc. Use an electric toothbrush, but with a gentle toothpaste. If, after a while, the situation isn't satisfactory, then it's time for a trip to you-know-where.
